1.  The basic concept of OD (optical density)

In the field of laser protection, OD (optical density) is an important indicator to measure the ability of laser protective glasses to attenuate laser energy. It is defined based on a logarithmic relationship, and the OD value is inversely proportional to the laser transmittance. Specifically, the relationship between laser transmittance T and OD value is T=10^-OD

For example, if the OD value is 1, then the transmittance T=10^-1=0.1, that is, only 10% of the laser energy can pass through the protective glasses.

2.  The specific meaning of OD7

When the OD value of laser protective glasses is 7, according to the above formula, its laser transmittance T=10^-7. This means that only a very small amount of laser energy can pass through the glasses, specifically, only 1 photon out of every 10 million laser photons can pass through the protective glasses.

This kind of protective glasses with a high OD value are used to protect high-energy, high-power lasers. For example, in industrial laser cutting and welding scenarios, the high-power lasers used (especially kilowatt-class fiber lasers) have very high energy. Without protective glasses with a high enough OD value, the operator's eyes will be seriously damaged. OD7 protective glasses can effectively block most of the energy of these high-power lasers and provide reliable protection for the eyes.
